Warszawa 1981: an eye on a razed and rebuilt city
A 1981 photo report about the city rebuilt on the ruins of the one destroyed by the Nazis. An eye on life and urbanism at the time of collectivism.
On first September 1939 the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland and herded 400.000 Polish Jews into the Warsaw Ghetto, in order to start the Final Solution. Most of them were deported and assassinated at the Treblinka extermination camp. On 19 April 1943, the remaining Jews launched the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, that ended a month later without survivors.
The Warsaw Uprising took place in 1944 by the Polish Resistance. At the end Germans expelled the rest of population and razed Warsaw to the ground.
Then the Soviet Red Army entered the ruins of Warsaw and liberated the city.
About 85% of the city had been destroyed. The death toll for the Warsaw’s residents was 400.000 Jews and 200.000 Polish murdered by the Germans.
After the war the rebuilding of Warsaw was initiated and large prefabricated housing projects were erected up to the fall of Communist regime in 1989.
